Last Mile Transportation Option

Project Outline

Design a compact yet powerful last mile transportation option for those living the nomadic lifestyle.

Date

Spring 2024

Problem Statement

I believe that nomadic people need help with solving the issue of having a lack of compact yet powerful last mile transportation options at their expense. This is an opportunity area because most products provided at the moment tend to under perform.

The Rise of Nomadic Living

Digital nomadism is more than just a trend; it’s a movement reshaping our work and lifestyle. With the increase in remote work opportunities, millions are embracing the freedom to live and work from anywhere. This change calls for innovative living solutions that address the unique needs of a mobile lifestyle.

Digital Nomads

The nomadic lifestyle is a lifestyle that embraces constant movement and living as efficiently as possible

Since the pandemic in 2019, the growth of the digital nomadic lifestyle has skyrocketed by 131% (2019-2022). Now the numbers grow at a more steady rate

This life is becoming more obtainable everyday due to the amount of remote job offerings on the market

Existing Products

Their range can be restrictive, often requiring frequent recharges for longer commutes or weekend adventures.

Many e-bikes lack foldable designs, which further limits their ability to fit into limited storage options.

Design Objectives

Create a product that is able to shrink its storage footprint when stored.

Nomads are tight on space, so they must be careful with what they choose to bring with them.

Create a product that can adopt to the current storage system on the sprinter van.

Nomads are particular with how they store their items on a camper van. Often they find themselves purchasing items from 3rd parties to store larger objects.

Create a product that has an easy storage process for the user.

Nomads tend to be aged between their 20’s to their 40’s. Methods of storage might differ due to the users age.

Design Inspiration

Quick Form Exploration

Form exploration done to gain a general visual idea for what the chassis of the product would look like.

Concepts

Focused on 3 different concepts on storage for the transportation option

Concept #1

The storage method for concept 1 is a folding method. The wheels would fold under the chassis when stored away to reduce the bike’s footprint.

Concept #2

The storage method for concept 2 is a folding method. The wheels would slide under the chassis on a track system when stored away to reduce the bike’s footprint.

Concept #3

The storage method for concept 3 is removing method. The wheels would be detachable to reduce the bike’s footprint.

User Survey Feedback

Sent out and posted a survey on how people feel about the product’s concepts and what they would prefer for methods of storage and use.

Form Refinement

Using the feedback from the user survey, another round of iteration were done focusing on the feedback received from the user. During this attention to detail went to solving what was mentioned by the user and honing in on aesthetics.

CAD Development

Using fusion 360 to further develop the form of the transportation option. Modeling the bike to scale using the proper measurement of an average person.

3D Printed Model

Using the Bambu Lab slicer and creating a G-code to print at 1/4 of the scale on the Bambu Lab X1-Carbon. Then glued together the printed parts for the final model.
